Croghan man charged with aggravated DWI after vehicle goes into ditch, deputies say

CROGHAN, NYBrian R. Keefer, 24, of 9679 Erie Canal Road, Croghan, was charged by Lewis County sheriff’s deputies at 12:42 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, on State Route 126 in the town of Croghan with aggravated driving while intoxicated, common law DWI and uninspected motor vehicle.

Patrols responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch on State Route 126.

“The operator stated he exited the roadway to avoid a collision with another vehicle. Keefer failed sobriety tests at the scene and was placed under arrest,” deputies said.

His blood alcohol content was 0.23 percent during a test at the state police barracks, deputies said. A BAC of 0.08 percent or more is considered proof of intoxication under state law. Aggravated DWI, which carries harsher penalties upon conviction is charged when the BAC is 0.18 percent or greater.

He is summoned to appear in Croghan Town Court at a later date.
