Eleanor A. Maitland, 86, Woodville

WOODVILLE, NY  — Eleanor A. Maitland, 86, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where she had been a resident of the fourth floor since 2010. She was 86 years old.

Born Jan. 29, 1932, the daughter to the late David and Doris Parsons Morenus, Sr.; she graduated in 1950 from Union Academy, Belleville.

She married Robert A. Maitland, Sr., on May 27, 1951, in Ellisburg, NY. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm from 1967 to 1976 at their home. Mr. Maitland passed away Feb. 12, 2008.

Eleanor was employed at Crouse Hinds Corp. and as a statistical typist at General Electric’s Light Military Equipment Division, Syracuse in the early 1950s. She was a copywriter for Frank A. Empsall, Watertown, Employee Magazine Editor and Technical Writer at the New York Air Brake Co., Watertown. She was also a statistical typist at Dairylea Corp., in the late 1970s and Office Supervisor at Cornell Cooperative Extension from 1980 until her retirement in 1986. After retirement she free-lanced for a time evaluating college newspapers for the Associated Collegiate Press.

She returned to her lifelong love of writing poetry, having published over 100 poems in area papers, The Lyric and Yankee Magazine. In 1998 her first poetry book Lines of the Eastern Shore was published.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Debra) Maitland, Jr., Adams; Christopher (Traci) Maitland, SC; a granddaughter, Melissa Maitland; a grandson, Christopher Maitland; a great-granddaughter, Harley-Anne; a great-grandson, Tanner Maitland; seven step granddaughters, a step grandson, nine step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by two brothers David Jr., Richard Morenus and two nephews, David Morenus and John Aurelli.

There will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
