Joseph P. Sanzone Jr., 63, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Joseph P. Sanzone, Jr., 63, passed away Tuesday February 5th surrounded by family in his home under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

He was also known under other aliases including Giuseppe, Joe, the Concierge, buddy, and the menace of Henderson Harbor.

Joe enjoyed life to the fullest and had many friends and hobbies. His interests included downhill and water skiing, boating, his Tiara 3200, biking, hunting, and extended cocktail hours. He was a loving father, husband, Dry Timber Lake member, and friend to many and he will be greatly missed.

Joe was born March 20, 1955, in Rome, NY, the son of Joseph and Rose Sanzone.  He attended Rome Free Academy, graduating in 1973, and Albany School of Pharmacy graduating in 1978.

He began his career as a registered pharmacist at the Rose Hospital in Rome, NY working there until marrying in 1982. He then moved to Buffalo, NY working at the VA Hospital and then at Fays Drugs as a consultant.  In 1986, he and Kellie moved to North Carolina and he worked for Owen Healthcare as Director of Pharmacy in Louisburg, NC.

He returned to northern New York in 1988 settling in Watertown and worked at Watertown Correctional Facility before becoming Director of Pharmacy Services at Samaritan Medical Center where he retired after 25 years. He was described as the go-to pharmacology person and many physicians depended on his readily available expertise.  He was a valued member and leader of the Samaritan Medical Center team serving on numerous hospital and medical staff committees, task forces, and sub-committees and was well-respected and admired by his colleagues.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Joe served on several  community boards. He was a board member of the Ives Hill Retirement Community from 2008-2018. Joe was also a board member of the Henry Keep Home for over 15 years and served as president for ten years. He was also a valued member of Dry Timber Lake Inc. and served as president for many years.

He is survived by his wife Kellie, daughters Jillian (fiancé Christina Rotsides) and Morgan (son-in-law Jake Exford), son Will, grandson Jack, sister Bernadette Remillard Surfside NC, brother Philip Sanzone Rome, NY and many nephews and nieces.   He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Rose Sanzone and his sisters Marla Najarian and Ann Aiello.

Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Cleveland Funeral Home, 404 Sherman St., Watertown, followed by a celebration of Joe at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
