Mary Abbass, 97, Carthage

CARTHAGE, NY — Mary Abbass, 97, formerly of Adelaide Street, Carthage, died Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown.

Mary was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Carthage, the daughter of the late Seide and Mary (Salamy) Ablan. She was a 1941 graduate of Augustinian Academy. She worked at the former Pine Camp and Crown Zellerbach in the office for 10 years until her marriage to Joseph Abbass on June 11, 1950, at St. James Church. Joseph died on July 23, 1982.

Mary worked at Carthage Area Hospital as a nursing assistant from 1971 until retiring in 1992.

She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 789 of Carthage, St. Joseph’s Workers, Ave Maria Circle, former President of the VIP’s and member of the Brady Acres and Deferiet Senior Citizens.

She is survived by three daughters, Ann Marie Abbass of Watertown, Joanne (Gary) Bartlett of Felts Mills and Jean Marie (Rocky) Stout of Tampa, FL; a son, Joseph (Sherry) Abbass of Watertown; four grandchildren, a great-granddaughterl and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Agnes Abbass, two brothers, John and Ablaine Ablan and two sisters, Genevieve Buckingham and Sister Mary Alfreda Ablan SSJ.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 11, at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. James Cemetery. There will be a calling hour 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
