Libraries
to Benefit from Community Foundation Grants

The Northern New York Community Foundation has
approved $120,919 in grants to local libraries, including $101,569 going to
forty three libraries which must contribute local funds to receive technology
grants from the Gates Foundation.
The Community Foundation’s grant will meet that requirement. The following
libraries in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties will benefit from the
grant to the North Country Library System which is administering the Gates
Technology grants:

“The Foundation has been
very supportive of libraries and their technology needs. In 1996, before the
Gates Foundation, we made computers and internet service available to libraries
in Jefferson and Lewis Counties. We are pleased to add the libraries in St.
Lawrence County for this grant,” said Alex Velto, the Foundation’s
Executive Director.
The Depauville Free Library
which had a fire will receive a grant of $11,850 to help replace books,
computers and furniture. The Reading Room Association of Gouverneur will
receive $7,500 toward their library loft project.
The Community Foundation’s
board also approved the following grants:
- $5,000 to Hand In Hand Early Childhood Center
for preliminary architectural plans for a childcare center in Watertown;
- $3,500 to Lewis County Opportunities toward
roof replacement on their safe house;
- $20,000 to Family Counseling Service of
Northern New York for a new full-time counselor position;
- $4,000 to the Constable Hall Association to
fund an Assistant Director position;
- $5,000 to Riverview Park Association in
Gouverneur for an amphitheater;
- $100,000 to match new funds contributed to the
Fort Drum Chapter’s 10th Mountain Division (Light) Scholarship
Fund;
- $7,280 to SUNY Potsdam for eight scholarships
to Crane Youth Music summer camp;
- $2,500 to Watertown SCORE for a matching grant
to access state grant funds.
