Media Release

ALBANY, N.Y., APRIL 9  —  Senator Darrel J. Aubertine (D – Cape Vincent) has scored a major budget victory in funding for new construction, infrastructure and expansion projects at two State University campuses in the 48th Senate District.

In the brief amount of time Sen. Aubertine has been in the upper house he has worked tirelessly on this budget and successfully secured $195 million for SUNY Oswego. The money will be targeted for a new General Science Lab ($69 million), campus-wide critical maintenance projects such as the Penfield Library Renovation and Utilities & Infrastructure Program Study ($21.9 million) as well as $103.8 million for General Funds/State Operations.

“I am extremely gratified that these funds were put back into the budget at my urging because this will help move the Oswego campus into a new phase of development,” said Sen. Aubertine. “The Oswego campus is an important part of the educational, economic development and employment fabric of the area. I want to thank President Deborah Stanley and the SUNY Oswego administration for supplying us with all the necessary details to bring this funding to fruition.”

Senator Aubertine also secured $61.4 million in funding for the SUNY Canton. The funds will be used to begin phase two of the Center for Athletics/Recreational Complex ($21.2 million), campus-wide critical maintenance projects such as structural renovations to Dana Hall ($5.2 million) and $35 million for General Funds/State Operations associated with personal and non-personal service.

“These funds are critical to continue the growing popularity of the SUNY Canton campus and the excellent programs offered by the administration,” Sen. Aubertine said. “The SUNY Canton campus is critical to the vitality of the entire region and this money will go a long way towards keeping that spirit alive for many more years.”

Senator Aubertine also led the effort to restore basic education funding for lower, middle and high schools in his district. The Senator also fought for and won restoration of the full-planned increase of three percent in the new spending plan, totaling $46.7 million for the schools and students in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties, the three counties in the 48th Senate District.
