State Police Investigating Double Fatal Crash in Town of Clayton

DEPAUVILLE, N.Y., May 18,  —  State police are investigating a one-car double fatal automobile accident that occurred at 1:55 a.m. Sunday on County Route 11 in the town of Clayton.

The deceased are identified as Jordan M. Houghton, 17, of County Route 54, Depauville, and Maxwell Z. Zeigler, 20, of 295 Swart Ave., Clayton.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that Mr. Houghton was operating a 2008 Toyota Yaris westbound on County Route 11 when he exited the south shoulder of the roadway. He then over corrected, crossing back over the westbound lane and exited the north shoulder of the roadway. At this point , the vehicle struck a number of trees, became airborne, and rolled back across both lanes of County Route 11 ending up on its front end lodged against trees off the south shoulder of the road, state police said.

Both Houghton and Zeigler were pronounced deceased at the scene by Dr. Robert Kasulki of the Jefferson County medical examiner's office. 

The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is assisting in the investigation which is continuing.  

Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Depauville, Clayton and LaFargeville fire departments, TIERS Ambulance, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
