Scozzafava
Holds News Conference at Hoffman's Front Door
Media Release
WATERTOWN, N.Y., October 21, 2009
— After weeks of watching her opponents side step and duck requests for a series of debates, today Republican and Independence Party candidate, Dede Scozzafava, brought the debate to her opponents' front door. This morning, Scozzafava held a press conference outside of Doug Hoffman's campaign office in Watertown, calling on him to come out of hiding and engage in a series of debate on the issues that matter to the people of the 23rd District.
Hoffman and Owens have spent their campaigns dodging and ducking, and they falsely believe that agreeing to one forum, days before Election Day, absolves them of their responsibility to speak to voters across the 23rd Congressional District.
"We are less than two weeks from Election Day, and despite numerous requests from Dede's campaign, media outlets and community groups, Bill Owens and Doug Hoffman still refuse to debate the issues critical to voters in the 23rd Congressional District," said Scozzafava Campaign Spokesman Matt Burns. "The people deserve to have all of the candidates look them in the eye and explain what they stand for and why they are seeking the privilege of representing them in Washington. If Bill Owens and Doug Hoffman are unwilling to face the voters as candidates, how could they ever be trusted to do so as a Congressman?"
To date, Owens and Hoffman have played "pass the buck" on scheduling a series of debates. Although Owens initially agreed to a debate on October 21, he abruptly backed out minutes later. Over the weekend, Hoffman denied ever being invited to some of the events - despite emails and media reports that suggest otherwise.
Burns added, "Disturbingly, Dede's opponents seem intent on running evasive campaigns that are driven solely by 30-second television commercials. It's time for Bill Owens and Doug Hoffman to come out of hiding."
