Yo-Johnny Frozen Yogurt is preparing to open a third location in the fall with a leafy, green twist and toppings exclusive to the new store.

Owner Johnny Spezzano says Yo-Johnny! Head of Lettuce, which will feature a custom salad station in addition to the local chain’s flagship frozen yogurt, will likely open its doors in October at Washington Street Plaza, 1320 Washington St., next door to the Key Bank branch.

Spezzano said the “chop shop” will feature a salad bar at which customers can choose from a variety of toppings and dressings before being “chopped” and mixed for the customer, similar to the experience found at Chop’t Creative Salad Company locations found in New York City and the Washington, D.C. area.

“What people will be able to do is they can come in and we’re going to help them make the salad of their dreams,” the owner said.

While customers will still be able to order frozen yogurt with familiar toppings, Spezzano said the addition of salads with toppings aligns with the customization Yo-Johnny customers like about the store.

“We’re already in the toppings business at Yo-Johnny,” Spezzano said. “We’re going to have all kinds of things to put in your salad to fresh fruit, almonds, berries and wasbi peas.”

The owner opened the first Yo-Johnny Frozen Yogurt store at 21852 Towne Center Drive in the town of Watertown in December and launched a second store in July at 1616 State St.

Spezzano said his third location adds to what he believes makes his other two locations successful.

"The north country loves dessert,” he said. “On top of that, this is the alternative to ice cream and people really like the localness of it and the fact I’m a guy in the community doing this.”

Spezzano said he plans to open more stores throughout the north country in 2014.
