Adeline C. Sutton, 78, of Sandy Creek Valley Drive,
died Monday morning, Jan. 2, at her home succumbing to a
recurrence of cancer.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, and 2
to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Cleveland Funeral
Home. A prayer service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6,
at the funeral home followed by the funeral Mass celebrated
11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Donald
Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood
Cemetery.
Born March 26, 1933, in Watertown, a daughter of the late
Nicholas and Anna Canale, she grew up in Watertown and
graduated in 1950 from Immaculate Heart Academy. She
graduated from Oswego State in 1954, continued education at
Potsdam College and received a master’s degree in
education from Syracuse University.
Adeline taught in General Brown, Indian River, Watertown
School District, and retired from Copenhagen Central School
in 1991.
She was active in the New York State Teacher’s Association
and the PTA’s in her children’s schools. She served as president
of these organizations. Through the years, she was active in
Grange, 4-H, and was the chairman of 4-H department of
Cornell Extension.
Other organizations include American Legion, House of the
Good Samaritan, Twig, CASA-Court Appointed Special Advocate,
Beta Sigma Phi, 50 year member.
She was on the board of directors of King’s Pointe adult
community in Florida where she wintered for the last 17
years.
Adeline married Richard J. Sutton Sr. in 1954. He died in
1980.
She is survived by her children, Priscilla M. Patenande and
husband, Pete P., Richard J. Sutton Jr. and wife, Ann, Teddy
A. Sutton and Lori LeRoux, and Mark W. Sutton and wife
Christine; a sister Marie Morgia; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Michael Canale and Dominic Canale, both died
before her.
