HENDERSON, N.Y. — Elva J. Ackley, 72,
of County Route 78, town of Ellisburg, passed away Tuesday
morning, Jan. 17, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown,
where she had been a patient.
Born April 27, 1939, in Walpole, N.H., a daughter to Addison
and Elizabeth Perry Kendall, she graduated from high school
in Springfield, Vt.
Elva married Robert Ackley on June 22, 1957, in Springfield,
Vt. Mr. and Mrs. Ackley moved to the Belleville area in
March 1973. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm on
County Route 78 for many years, and Mr. Ackley served as the
highway superintendent for the town of Ellisburg from 1990
until retiring in 2007.
Mrs. Ackley joined the United States Postal Service in 1991
as a Postmaster Relief (PMR), serving at several Post Office
locations in southern Jefferson County, and primarily at the
Belleville Post Office, until retiring in 2009.
Mrs. Ackley served on the Woodside Cemetery Association
board. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, baking,
and writing entries in her journals.
Bob and Elva fulfilled a lifelong dream when they traveled
to Alaska in 2008.
Surviving are her husband, Robert; five daughters, Carol
(Dennis) Forrester, Elaine Lane, Marcia (Don) Nolder, all of
Henderson, Marian (Delmar) Anderson, Sierra Vista, Ariz.,
and Kendra (Chris) Eagan, Alexandria, Va.; her
grandchildren, Matthew Forrester, Amy Zumbach, Rachel
Zumbach, Christina Rudd, Kevin Lane, Sara Snider, Jessica
Lane, Daisy Keresey, Derrick Nolder, Gari Lynn Dial, Ann
Brownell, Marie Stewart, Nicole Cheslock, numerous great
grandchildren, her sister Lora (Wayne) Wheelock; three
brothers, Harrison (Janet) Kendall, Jason Kendall and
companion Sharon, Orson Kendall and companion Theresa, all
of Baltimore, VT, and many nieces and nephews.
Elva was predeceased by her father Addison, mother
Elizabeth, and brother, Alvin.
Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at
Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home with services immediately
following. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery.
