Sherman L. Babcock

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  —  Sherman L. Babcock, 76, formerly of 660 West End Ave., passed peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 18, at his daughter’s home in Gloversville with his loving daughter and her husband and granddaughter by his side. He had been battling pancreatic cancer for three months. 

Born Sept. 13, 1935, in Carthage, the son of Joseph Michael and Florence E. Blanchard Babcock, he attended Carthage schools later earning his GED. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957 as a private first class. 

He was employed as a construction laborer with the Laborer Local 322. 

Mr. Babcock was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.

He married Shirley E. Carpenter on Dec. 31, 1958, at the Presbyterian Church in Carthage. Mrs. Babcock died July 2, 1976. His longtime companion was Rhoda Simser, who died Feb. 5, 2007. 

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. 

He loved watching westerns and enjoyed baking. He was a fan of Tony Stewart and the New York Yankees.

Surviving are several children and their spouses, Gwen and Frank Skvorak, Gloversville, George and Lynn Simser, Watertown, Robin and Scott Coutermarsh, Carthage, Sharon and Bruce Ormiston, Fla., Marc and Amy Simser, Carthage, Kevin Simser and his companion, Sandy, Cary, North Carolina, Michelle and Michael Lewis, Apex, N.C., and Todd and Lori Simser, Croghan; several sisters and brothers; Donna Davis, Carthage, Ruth and Donald Meyer, Castorland, Joseph and Mary Babcock, Dexter, John Babcock, Watertown; Donald and Sharon Babcock, Calif., Michael Babcock, Fla., and Rose & Darwin Morgan, Natural Bridge; 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A sister, Christine Babcock Miles, died before him.

Calling hours will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Chapel of the Funeral Home. 

Entombment with military honors will take place in Fairview Cemetery in the spring.
