Jonathan B. Zehr

CASTORLAND, N.Y. —  The funeral for Jonathan B. Zehr, 68, 5454 Route 410, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Croghan Mennonite Church with the Rev. Edward Roggie and Rev. David Haldeman, pastors of Carthage Mennonite Church and Rev. Julius Moser, retired pastor of Croghan Mennonite Church officiating. Spring burial will be in the Croghan Mennonite Cemetery. 

Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the church.  

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Croghan Mennonite Cemetery. 


Arrangements are with the Adirondack Funeral Home, Croghan. 

Born Nov. 8, 1939, in Carthage, son of William S. and Helen Rohde Zehr, he attended Carthage schools. 

Mr. Zehr was employed at Climax Manufacturing in Castorland and Lowville, retiring in 2002. 

He married Elsie Zehr at the Croghan Mennonite Church on Oct. 19, 1963, with the Rev. Richard Zehr officiating. 

He was a member of the Carthage Mennonite Church. He served as church treasurer, Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school treasurer, and was active in many other church activities. He was a member of the Castorland Fire Company.  

He enjoyed making maple syrup, working with Beller’s Wrecker crew at Adirondack International Speedway, and the coffee clubs at Beller’s Auto, the Castorland Village Garage, and the Croghan Diner. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Jonathan Jr., at home; five daughters and three sons-in- law, Darlene and Ricky Hunkins, Beaver Falls, Brenda and Kevin Williams, Winsted, Conn.; Michelle and Jeremiah Ward, Watson; Denise, Beaver Falls; and Charity, at home; five brothers and two sisters Arlis and Virginia, Texas, Donald and Donna, Kansas, Andrew and Sharon, Castorland, Jerry and Sherry, Clifton Springs, and Daryl and Wanda, Delaware, Dolores Burnham, Carthage, and Karleen and Ronald Zehr, Castorland; 10 grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces nephews and cousins. 

He is predeceased by three brothers, Erwin ”Doney”, and Frank and William who died as infants; and three sisters, Beverly Houppert, Mary Gonyou, and Emma.
