Marjorie A. VanWie, 93, formerly of Vernon Center
and Oriskany Falls, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon,
Jan. 18, in the Harding Nursing Home of Waterville, N.Y.,
where she had resided since May 2010.
Born Sept. 10, 1917, in Oneida, a daughter of Ernest Wynan
and Alice Charlotte (Coe) Taylor of Hubbard Place, she was a
graduate of Oneida High School.
On July 3, 1946 Marjorie and Robert M. VanWie were united in
marriage in Oneida, New York and shared that union of over
sixty years until Mr. VanWie's death on Feb. 18, 2007.
Marge was a member of the First United Methodist Church of
Oneida.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Leon and
Marjorie VanWie, Watertown; four granddaughters, Melissa and
Matt Huckels, Charleston, S.C., Christina Shoemaker and her
companion Kris Watson, Plattsburgh, Jennifer and Mark Miller,
Oneida, and Kristy and Andrew Makuch, Brownville; nine
great-grandchildren, Austin and Caleb Shoemaker; Maddox,
Merrick and Miranda Miller, Julia and Jakob Abel, Eric and
Monica Makuch; two brothers, David (Connie) Taylor, Oneida,
and Rodney Taylor, Pratts Hollow; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Erna Major, and five
brothers: Karl, Ernest “Red”, Milton, Velton and Wynan
“Barney”.
Marge worked as a nurse at the Rome State School, Dean
Nursing Home, Maple Park Home and the Oneida City Hospital.
She also worked as a private duty nurse. In 1970 she became
one of the first nutrition aides for the Expanded Food and
Nutrition Education Program of Cornell Cooperative
Extension, retiring from that position in 1982.
Mr. and Mrs. VanWie lived in Vernon Center for over 60 years
and were honored as the King and Queen of Old Homes Days
several years ago. After leaving Vernon Center they
lived at Burleigh Apartments in Oriskany Falls.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at
Malecki Funeral Home, 23 Front Street, Vernon, with the
service to celebrate her life to follow at 4 p.m. Rev.
Colleen H. Preuninger, pastor of the First United Methodist
Church of Oneida will officiate. Following the service the
family will be receiving friends for a time of fellowship
and refreshment at the Vernon Center Volunteer Fire
Department, 5686 Youngs Road (Rte. 31) in Vernon Center.
