CROGHAN,
N.Y. — Barbara A. Peters, 70, of 7377 Old
State Rd., died Tuesday evening at the Lewis County
Residential Healthcare Facility, where she had resided since
November 2007.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at St.
Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Belfort. Arrangements
are with the Adirondack Funeral Home, Croghan.
Born June 15, 1937, in Wayne County, daughter of Henry and
Ella Yancey Cooney, she attended schools in Newark, N.Y.
In 1954, she moved to Croghan and lived with her Uncle Joe
and Aunt Lena Yancey on the Yancey Homestead in Belfort. She
graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1955.
She married Howard Peters in Croghan on Nov. 5, 1955. He
died April 25, 1981.
Mrs. Peters served as Town of Croghan tax collector from
January 1990 until December 2004.
She helped her husband and children in the operation of the
family sugarbush.
She was a member of the Long Pond Snowsled Club, enjoyed
crocheting, knitting, reading, and always looked forward to
playing cards with her children and grandchildren. She also
collected refrigerator magnets.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law,
Robert and Sharon, Castorland; Randy and Jane and Richard,
all of Croghan; a daughter and her husband, Susan and Henry
F. Bush, Croghan; two brothers and their wives, Edward and
Bonnie Cooney, Newark, N.Y., and Roy and Judy Cooney,
Choctaw, Okla.; a brother-in-law, John Barner, Dayton Ohio;
eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
Besides her husband she is predeceased by a daughter,
MaryAnn, who died at birth, and two sisters, Marion Barner
and Priscilla Roelands.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at
the Adirondack Funeral Home, Main St . Croghan, with Rev.
Bruce Lyndaker, pastor of Emmaus Bible Fellowship and Rev.
Daniel Chapin, pastor of St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic
Church officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Vincent de
Paul Cemetery, Belfort.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb.
7, at the
funeral home.

memorial donations can be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire
Dept. Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 405, Croghan, N.Y. 13327.
