Gary L. Newman, 74, of 422 S. Clinton St., died Sunday morning,
Feb. 19, at the Skilled Nursing Facility of Carthage Area Hospital, where he had been a resident since
September 2011.
Born Aug. 28, 1937, in Carthage, the son of James and Lilac “Tillie” Perrigo, he attended local schools.
He married Cynthia M. Walseman on August 16, 1958, at the Carthage Methodist Church with the Rev. Hudson officiating. He served in the United States Army Reserve for 8 years.
Mr. Newman was employed by Durkee’s bakery, the Altamont Milk Co. and the Carthage Boys Club. He retired from the Carthage Machine Shop in 1998.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE #1762, Carthage and the Carthage Rod & Gun Club. He was an umpire for the Carthage Softball League as well as the Carthage Little League for many years.
Mr. Newman enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending auctions and was a fan of the New York Yankees.
Surviving are his wife, Cynthia, his son and his wife, Mitchell J.
and Janet Newman, Ohio; three sisters; Patricia Schermerhorn, Florida, Yvonne Pettit,
Fla., Barbara and her husband, Harry Gotham, Carthage; two brothers and their
wives, Rocky and Carole Newman, Carthage and Randy and Cheryl Newman, Natural Bridge.
Two brothers, Gerald and Fred, both died before him.
A funeral service for will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 22, in the chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with
Rev. Linda J. Harris officiating. A memorial luncheon will be held at the Carthage Elks Lodge following the service. Visitation will be held
6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the funeral home.
