Richard “Dick” Secor Sr., 73, of 222 State St., Apt. 209, died Tuesday
evening, Feb. 22, at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with his children by his side. He had been a patient for several days. He was a lifelong resident of the
north country.
Born Nov. 9, 1937, in Watertown, the son of Jesse and Irma Adams
Secor, he graduated from General Brown School. He served in the United States Army Reserves
1956 to 1962.
He was manager for the Goodyear Tire Stores in Watertown, Syracuse, and Ithaca.
Dick owned and operated Carthage Tire on North Mechanic Street for 33 years.
He demonstrated his passion for working; he always had a welcoming smile and a helping hand. He worked until he became ill in January 2010.
A marriage to Mary Ammons Secor ended in divorce.
Surviving are two childrenm Jean Secor Tabolt, Watertown,
and Richard Secor Jr., Carthage; two sisters, Roberta Prosser and Alberta Butler, both of Rochester;
several brothers, Gary Secor, North Carolina, Jerry Secor,
Rochester, Raymond Secor, Colo., and Rodney Secor,
Rochester; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He loved giving back to his community, he would volunteer in any way he could.
He was a member of the Basette-Baxter American Legion Post #789; He served as Past Exalted Ruler of the Carthage Elks Lodge BPOE #1762, Chairman for the Beljar and BINGO for the Elks Lodge and he was past trustee. He volunteered on several committees for the Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post # 7227 in Carthage. He was past-president of the Rotary Club and the Toast Masters, in Watertown. He was past president of the the Lions Club in Carthage.
He was a member of the Carthage Zoning Board from 1987 to 1997 and the director of United Fund in Carthage.
He served with the Chamber of Commerce as chairman for the Citizen of the Year Committee since 1982.
Through his leadership the Elks Lodge has been able to donate thousands of dollars to various community groups.
Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 25, at Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, Inc., 500 State St. The Carthage Elks Lodge will
conduct a service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held
11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in the chapel of the funeral home with
full military honors and Deacon Richard J. Staab, officiating. A
reception will follow at the Carthage Elks Lodge. Burial will take place in the spring in the North Watertown Cemetery.
