Bernice L. Carter

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Bernice L. “Bernie” Carter, 85, formerly of Brookside Senior Living Community, and Summit Ave., died Wednesday morning, March 2, at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, where she had resided since September 2009.  

The funeral will be noon Saturday, March 5, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville, with Rev. Herb Swanson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Lowville, officiating.  Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery.  

Born
Aug. 16, 1925, in the town of New Bremen, a daughter of the late Fred and Ada Werner Woolshlager, she graduated in 1943 from Lowville Academy, and from the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1946.  

She married Charles F. Carter on June 5, 1948, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Rochester, N.Y.

Bernie was employed for many years as a Registered Nurse, both at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and Lewis County General Hospital. Before having children, Bernie served as director of Nursing at Lewis County General Hospital and retired as a supervising R.N. in 1980.

Bernie was an active member of The First Presbyterian.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles; a son and daughter-in-law, David F. and Nancy Carter of Ravena, NY; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Jeff Nowicki of Boonville, three grandchildren, Kelsey and Mathew Carter and Larisa Nowicki; a very special sister-in-law, Isabel Woolshlager of Lowville; and sisters-in-law, Clarice Miller and Edna Carter of Rochester; nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

A brother, Harold Woolshlager, and by a sister, Anita Curtiss, died before her.
