Louise A. Sweredoski Vogt

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Louise A. “Lil” Sweredoski Vogt, 82, of Grove Street, died Thursday, March 3, at the home of her daughter, under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

Born May 18, 1928, at the family home on the Morgan Gulf Road in Turin, the daughter of the late Martin and Katherine Wojnarowski Zubrzycki, Lil graduated from General Martin High School in Glenfield. 

She married Thomas J. Sweredoski on Jan. 27, 1946, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Houseville. Lil and Tom together owned and operated Tommy’s Grill, Lowville, Town Talk Restaurant, Copenhagen, and Foothills Restaurant at Hamblins Corners until Tom’s death in August 1971. She sold the Foothills in 1981 but continued to work there until her retirement in 1989.

She married Leonard E. Vogt on Oct. 18, 1986, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Houseville with Rev. Paschal Rys, Pastor officiating. Lil moved to Copenhagen and became a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she became involved with dinners, donating quilts, and helping with various church activities.

She was a Gold Circle member of the Lewis County Memorial Post #6912 V.F.W. Auxiliary, and charter member of the Lowville Fire Department Auxiliary.

Lil and Leonard enjoyed going to the casinos, traveling to the Charity Casino in Canada, or to the riverboats in Illinois and Oklahoma, the Turning Stone or local bingo. She loved blueberry picking, baking, making quilts for everyone for their birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions. Lil’s passion for life was her family, grandchildren and family reunions.

She is survived by her husband Leonard, her five children, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kasia and Terry Elsbury, Taylor Ridge, Il; Julie and Frank Petrus, Lowville; Chris Sweredoski, Jones, Okla.; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Fred and Margaret Sweredoski, Karl “Bimz” and Diane Sweredoski, all of Lowville; Penny Sweredoski –Tyner, Watertown; 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and expecting a great-great grandchild.

Her brother and three sisters in-law, Steve and Ruth Zubrzycki, Rose Zubrzycki, Sophie Zubrzycki all of Lowville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sophie Samsa, Lowville, and Janice Pelcher, Rochester, Gerald Williams, Jefferson City, Tenn.

Her three step sons, Larry and Gail Vogt of Florida; Dean Vogt and Peter and Chris Vogt all of Copenhagen.

She is predeceased by her son, Thomas M., a grandson, Stephen Andrew Elsbury, four brothers, Anthony, Karl, Edward, Stanley Zubrzycki; two sisters, Caroline Williams and Frances Butula.

A funeral Mass will be said 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher Carrara, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Sundquist Funeral Home.
