Donald A. Turner

ANTWERP, N.Y.  —  Donald A. Turner, 70, of Carpenter Road, died Saturday evening March 22, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Born Nov. 25, 1937, in Ogdensburg, the son of George and Vera Stevenson Turner, he and his family moved to Antwerp when he was a child. He graduated form Indian River Central School, Antwerp Branch in 1956. Following his education, he worked on his mother’s farm.

He married Nancy Merritt on Sept. 10, 1960, at the Brasie Corners United Methodist Church and the couple moved to Carpenter Road where they established their own farm. Mr. Turner also had been employed at Northern Asphalt and the New York Air Brake, both of Watertown and had worked in construction.

He was a member of the Cooperative Extension, serving on the board, Eastern Milk Producers, the Antwerp Grange, serving as Master and also the county, state and national grange, Antwerp Town Justice, Antwerp Town Board member and Young Farmer’s, where he received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1974. 

He supported mud bogs at his farm to raise funds for the Antwerp Fire Department and he enjoyed basketball, soccer, bowling and his children and grandchildren. He attended every sports function his grandchildren participated in.

Survivors including his wife, Nancy; four sons and two daughter-in-laws, George, Antwerp, Randy and Cindy, Philadelphia, Barry and Amy, Spragueville and Donald II “Bumper”, Texas; a sister, Elaine Cottrill, Seville, Ohio; three granddaughters; two grandsons; nieces an nephews.

A graveside service at Brasie Corners Cemetery will be in the spring.
