Elizabeth J. Lacey

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Elizabeth J. "Betty" Lacey, 80, died Sunday, April 3, at East Road Adult Home, where she had been a resident since June 2007. 

Born July 15, 1930, in the town of Martinsburg, the daughter of Arthur and Stella Vary Lasher Rowsam, she graduated in 1946 from Lowville Academy.  

She married Orville F. Lacey on Aug. 28, 1948, at her family’s home in the town of Martinsburg with Rev. Roger F. Williams officiating. 

Mrs. Lacey was employed at Lowville Laundry for several years. She and her husband owned and operated Lacey’s Sunoco gas station and Mr. Steam, a carpet and upholstery cleaning business. She retired in 1993 after twelve years of working in the billing department of the Lewis County General Hospital. 

She was a member of West Martinsburg Homemakers Demonstration Group and a life-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6912, Lowville.  

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, antiquing, and collecting.  Mrs. Lacey also enjoyed country music. 

Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and John Waligory, Lowville, Deborah and James Burnett, Cape Coral, Fla., and Tammy Lacey, Watertown; two sisters, Dorothy Walter, Lowville, and Winifred (Mitchel) Sweredoski, Delray Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, John E. Waligory, Jennifer Waligory-Lee, Matthew J. Burnett, Andrea L. Burnett, Jason Lacey and Rebecca Murphy; 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  

Her husband, Orville F. Lacey, a son, David S. Lacey, an infant son, Gary Lacey, a brother, John E. Rowsam, and a great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Murphy, all died before her.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville, with Rev. Dena Stevens, pastor of Lowville United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in West Lowville Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, prior to the funeral service.
