Helen B. Jones

COPENHAGEN, N.Y.  —  Helen B. Jones, 97, formerly of Copenhagen, died Tuesday, April 8, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since 2001.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Copenhagen, with Rev. Timothy J. Soucy, Pastor, officiating. Arrangements are with the Sundquist Funeral Home.

Born May 15, 1910, in the town of Lowville, a daughter of Frederick C. and Magdelena Feistamel O’Brien, she graduated from Lowville Free Academy and it’s teacher-training class. She furthered her education at Potsdam Normal receiving her teaching degree. 

Mrs. Jones retired from the Copenhagen Central School as a substitute teacher.

She married Robert Jones on May 17, 1934, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville. They had a son, Robert J. Jones. Together the couple owned and operated the general store on Route 12 in the village of Copenhagen for many years. Mrs. Jones continued operating the store after her husband’s death in 1977, renaming it Jones’ Antiques.

Mrs. Jones was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Copenhagen. 

She enjoyed needlepoint and knitting and playing bridge. She and her husband were members of a bridge club together.

Surviving Mrs. Jones are several nieces and nephews. 

Three brothers, Robert, Frederick and Harold O’Brien Sr., and a sister, Genevieve O’Brien, all died before her.

A funeral Mass was said 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville with Rev. Timothy J. Soucy, pastor, officiating.
