Richard W. Martin Sr.

WATERTOWN, N.Y.  —  Richard W. Martin Sr., 90, formerly of Watertown, passed away Wednesday, April 10, at Casa Mora in Bradenton, Fla.

Born Jan. 26, 1923, in Watertown, a son of Carl B. and Doris Gothright Martin, Sr., he graduated from Cranwall Prep School in Lenox, Mass., attended Norwich Military University in Northfield, Vt., leaving college due to being drafted into the Army. 

He married Sally Hutchings in January 1946. The couple lived in Watertown, Thousand Island Park and Bradenton, Fla. Mrs. Martin died March 6, 2005.

At the age of 55, he retired from the Jefferson County Department of Motor Vehicles as a registrar. 

Mr. Martin was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 61 and the North Side Improvement League.

Surviving are four sons and three daughters in-law, John H. and Harriett, South Greenville, SC, Richard W., Jr. and Margaret, Watertown, Thomas A. and his companion Chris Kratzert, Stephen A. and Robin, all of Alexandria Bay; two daughters and their husbands, Victoria S. and John LaBreck, Palmetto, Fla., and Stephanie A. and Stewart Shannon, Oswego; a brother and his wife, Carl and Margaret Martin, Henderson Harbor; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. 

Two sisters, Jane Shuster and Ruth Wing, both died before him.

A graveside service will be held in the spring, at a day and time to be announced, with military honors in Riverside Cemetery on Wellesley Island.
