Jane E. Peebles Young

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  —  Jane E. Peebles Young, 91, of State Street, died Sunday afternoon, April 14, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Peter D. and Patricia Peebles, Lowville, under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired Methodist minister, officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Martinsburg Cemetery. A gathering will immediately follow the memorial service at the VFW in Lowville.

Born Aug. 22, 1921, in the town of Martinsburg, a daughter of the late Olin and Mae Flander Moore, she attended rural school on the Gardner Road. 

She married McClure “Pat” Peebles on Aug. 18, 1940, at First Mennonite Church in New Bremen, with Rev. French officiating. Mr. Peebles died in March 1983. 

She worked for several years at Baker’s Grill, two years at Greystone Manor Nursing Home in Martinsburg, and worked as a cleaner at social services for a couple of years. 

Jane moved to Carthage, and was a caregiver for private homes for several years, retiring in 1986.

She enjoyed crocheting and walking.

Surviving are six children and their spouses, Francis John and Marcia Peebles, Clayton, N.C., Ida Mae Roberts, Vernon, Conn., Douglas Lee and Joyce Peebles, Harrisville, Mark Allen and Diane Peebles, Natural Bridge, Peter D. and Patricia Peebles, Lowville, and David Patrick Peebles and his companion, Ellen Brock, Deferiet; a sister-in-law, Helen Moore, Deer River; 23 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins. 

She was predeceased by two sons, Grant Olin Peebles in 1958, and Edward McClure Peebles in 1991; five brothers, Leon, Edward, Robert, George and Francis Moore; a half-brother, Arthur Finn; and a sister, Florence Young.
