— Donald H. Maring, 79, of Watertown, passed away
Saturday, Apr. 30, in the emergency room at Samaritan Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1931, in Lowville, the son of Lawrence and Doris Wilkinson
Maring, he graduated from Lowville Academy, then entered the Naval Reserves.
On Sept. 14, 1963, he married Kathleen A. Lawler in Lowville with Rev. Richard Allen officiating.
On Mar. 1, 1978, the marriage was blessed at Holy Family Church by Msgr. Robert J. McCarthy.
From 1953 - 1987 he served with the New York State Police, becoming a
zone sergeant. He loved the New York State Police and all of the wonderful men and women in law enforcement. He also served for two years as undersheriff.
He was the superintendent of St. Patrick's Church for nine years.
He was also the Watertown Town Justice for twelve years, retiring June 9, 2008.
The law enforcement community kept him busy during those years and he loved every minute of it. He brought true meaning to the word “Honorable”.
He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and attended daily mass at the Sisters of the Precious Blood. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Adams.
Don was a member and former vice president of both the New York
State Magistrates Assoc. and the Black Horse Chapter of the
New York State Police.
He was a member of the Rusty Gun Club and was an avid hunter. He enjoyed carpentry, stained glass, and crossword puzzles. He was an important member of Harby's Gang and his passion was practical jokes.
Besides his wife, Kathleen, he is survived by his four children, David Gregory
Maring, Watertown, Andrea Leigh Grant and companion, Patrick
Vrooman, Watertown, Christopher Todd Maring and wife, Janna L., Brownville, and Timothy Matthew Maring and companion, Laura
Furey, Port Jefferson; three children from a previous marriage, a daughter, Carolyn and Carl
Burian, Brewerton, Thomas and Valarie Maring, N. Syracuse, and Andrew
Maring. Poppy's five grandchildren, Shaela, Kenna, and Quinten
Maring, Jacob Grant, and Cierra Maring; his brother and his wife, Leo and Joan
Maring, W. Webster; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Two brothers, Francis and James, died before him. Don, Leo, and James were all NYS Troopers at the same time.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc.,
Watertown. The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m.
Thursday, May 5, at Holy Family Church, with Rev. Steven Murray officiating with burial following.
