Muriel C. Hirschy

NEW BREMEN, N.Y.  —  Muriel Crouse Hirschy, 86, formerly of the Ossant Road, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 3, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility where she had resided since 2002.

Born Oct. 25, 1924, in the town of Watson, a daughter of the late Albert and Hazel Liendecker Crouse, she graduated from Lowville Free Academy. 

She married Elmer Arnold Hirschy on March 1, 1945, with Rev. Carlton J. Frazier officiating. While Elmer was serving in WWII, Muriel worked at the Basket Factory in Utica and upon his return to the States; they became the fourth generation of farmers on his parents’ homestead on the Beach Hill Road. Muriel also worked at Bender’s Nursing Home and retired from Kalet’s Adult Home. Mr. Hirschey died in November 1981. 

As a young girl, Muriel attended the New Bremen Methodist Church and later transferred her membership to the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Watson Friendly Club, the Lowville Fish and Game Club, the Number Four Hunting Club, Lewis County Memorial Post #6912 V.F.W. Auxiliary and the New Bremen Fire Department Auxiliary.

Well known for her expert card playing, Muriel was an avid Euchre and Canasta player. She also played bingo at the nursing home, as well.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired minister officiating. Burial will be in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. Calling hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday prior to the memorial service at the Sundquist Funeral Home.

Surviving are children, Cindy Peck and husband, Bruce, New Bremen; David and Evelyn Hirschy, Lowville; Elaine Morrison and husband, Kenny, and Duane Hirschy, Rome; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great great-granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by Duane’s twin, Donald, a brother, Milton Crouse, three sisters, Edra Russell, Aletha Haggerty and Luella Sakowski and a great-granddaughter, Tessa Damon.
