Harold J. Benware, 85, of State Street, passed away Sunday morning, June 17,
at Samaritan Medical Center where he had been a patient since May 1.
A funeral Mass will be said 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Holy Family Church.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in Glenwood Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.
Born Feb. 2, 1927, in Herrings, a son of Ballard B. and Eva Serviss
Benware, he graduated from Carthage High School.
He entered the Navy on Feb. 2, 1945, and received the World Wr II Victory, Asiatic Pacific, and American Theater Medals during his service. On July 21, 1946, he was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class.
He married Lauretta Filiatrault on April 17, 1955, in Philadelphia. She died
Oct. 27, 1973.
After his naval service, he attended Buffalo Barber College. From 1961 until his retirement in May 2012, he owned and operated the Carriage House Barber Shop.
He was a communicant of Holy Family Church, and a member of both the Knights of Columbus Council 259 and American Legion Post 61.
Surviving are three children, Kevin P. Benware, and wife, Ruth A., Watertown, Cheryl A. Benware, Gouverneur, and Anthony J. Benware, Adams; six grandchildren and
a great-grandson; three siblings, Clarence Benware, Black River, Carl Benware, Watertown, and Jeanette Caulkins, Watertown; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
