LOWVILLE, N.Y. —
Robert M. Peterson, 82, of Dewitt Street, died
Saturday, June 18, at Lewis County General Hospital.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Turin
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Billie Jean Melton,
Pastor, officiating. Calling hours are from noon to 2 p.m.
prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will follow the
funeral service in Lowville Rural Cemetery.
Bob was born on July 23, 1928 at home in the Town of
Martinsburg, a son of the late John D. and M. Louise Claus
Peterson. He attended country school, and graduated from
Lowville Academy in 1946. Following graduation, he
worked on the family farm.
On April 19, 1952, he married Carol J. Richards at St.
Peter’s Rectory in Lowville, with Monsignor John Hogan
officiating.
Together with his wife, the couple took over the family
farm, and owned and operated Pine Gulf Farm until their
retirement in 1994. Mr. Peterson had registered Holstein
cattle that were shown at several county fairs and the New
York State Fair. He raised prize cattle, several of which
were champions. His proudest moment was Get of Sire
that were nominated for All American. After retirement, he
was cattle superintendent for the Lewis County Agricultural
Society until 2008.
Mr. Peterson was a member of Turin United Methodist Church,
and a member of the former Houseville United Methodist
Church, and served as a Trustee of Turin Methodist Church.
He was a member of Lewis County Farm Bureau, Denmark Grange,
and a member of the former Lowville Grange No. 71. Mr.
Peterson had previously served as Director of Lewis County
D.H.I.C, where he served on the District Review Board, was a
member of the 4-H Dairy Advisory Board and served as
Chairman of the 4-H Division Executive Committee. Bob served
as a Lewis County Cooperative Extension Ag Committeeman, as
a director of Lewis County Holstein Club, were he was a past
secretary and president, a director and past treasurer of
Lowville Producer’s Dairy Cooperative, a director of
Lowville Farmer’s Cooperative, Inc., and as a former
A.S.C.S. community director.
When Bob was younger, he played basketball and softball on
the town team. He enjoyed bowling in local leagues and
snowmobiling with family and friends.
After retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with his youngest
daughter, Jill.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol; four children
and their spouses, Jerry M. and Patricia Peterson of
Rochester; JoAnn and Paul Bartschat of Frankford Township,
N.J.; Jacqueline and Frank Archer of Lowville; Dr. Jill C.
Peterson and Chris Raehm of West Monroe, N.Y.; seven
grandchildren, Heather and Todd Peterson, Brandon and Nicole
Bartschat, Bethany Archer, Andrew and Jacob Robert Raehm; a
sister, Mary Morgan of Boonville; nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Jan M. Peterson, who died
November 24, 1973; three brothers, Donald Peterson, James
Peterson, Max “Bill” Peterson; and three sisters,
Bernice Lee, Beulah Smith, and Florence Gallup.
