Margaret K. Mattis

ROME, N.Y.  —  Margaret K. “Maggie” Mattis, 80, formerly of New Bremen and Deer River, died Thursday evening, June 23, at Walsh ICF, Cypress Street, where she has resided since 2003.

Born Aug. 18, 1930, in the town of New Bremen, the daughter of the late George Arthur and Frances Bailey Mattis, she attended District # 4 rural school on the Mattis Road. She lived with her parents on the family farm on the Mattis Road and Park Avenue in Lowville.

She then lived with her care taker Sue Croniser in Deer River until she moved to Rome where she resided at Wheeler IRA. She moved to Walsh ICF in 2003. 

Maggie enjoyed taken day trips and attended day care while in Rome.

When she was younger, she was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, New Bremen, and later at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan.

Surviving are a brother and his wife, Clifford and Sue Mattis, Copenhagen; a sister and her husband, Shirley and Stanley Bush, North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Alice Mattis Jardine, Arizona; several nieces and nephews. 

A brother, Richard J. Mattis, died before her.

A funeral mass will be said 2 p.m. Monday, June 27, at St. Peter’s Oratory in New Bremen with Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor, officiating. A prayer service for family and friends will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s church cemetery.
