William
W. Becker, 83, of Patty Street, died Tuesday morning, July
3, at Lewis County General Hospital.
A graveside service with
military honors will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 7, in
St. Peter's Cemetery, New Bremen with the Rev. Mr. Ronald
Pominville officiating. A gathering at the Croghan
American Legion will immediately follow the graveside
service, and all are welcome. There will be no calling
hours.
Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Lowville.
Born Aug. 23, 1928, in
Lowville, a son of the late Louis J. and Marion Walter
Becker, he attended Lowville Academy and left school to join
the Navy. He served from November 1945 until his honorable
discharge in October 1947.
He married Louise Stoddard on Dec. 21, 1947, at St.
Stephen's Catholic Church rectory with the Rev. Francis
Kearney officiating.
The couple owned and operated the Hotel Hendel, Lyons Falls,
during the 1950s. Bill was a deputy sheriff in Lyons Falls
from 1958 to 1964, moving to New Bremen, owning and
operating the Crystal View Hotel during the 1960s. He and
his son-in-law, Gary Bush, then purchased Double “B”
Contracting, and operated the business until his retirement
in 1982. Mrs. Becker died July 4, 2002. The business is now
run by the couple's daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gary
Bush, New Bremen, and their two sons.
Mr. Becker was a communicant of St. Peter's Oratory, New
Bremen; BPOE #1605, Lowville Lodge, Beaver River Memorial
Post #1663, American Legion.
He was a former member and Chief of the Lyons Falls Fire
Department and a Charter Member of the New Bremen Fire
Department.
Bill enjoyed woodworking, fishing and spending time with his
family.
Surviving are three children and their spouses, Linda and
Gary Bush, New Bremen, Brenda Becker Kelly, Bainbridge, N.Y.,
and William J. and Ann Becker, Lowville; a brother and
sister-in-law, David and Mary Ann Becker, New Bremen; six
grandchildren, a great-grandson and several nieces, nephews
and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Louise; by two sisters, Lois
Bolivar and Jean Ogden.
