Romain E. Barton

ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY -- Romain E. ‘Spide” Barton, 94, of 122 Ranch Rd., Clearwater, Florida, formerly of Alexandria Bay, died Sunday at River Hospital, where he had been a patient since June 28.

Mr. Barton owned and operated Barton’s Cottages at Swan Bay and worked for many years at Crowley milk plant in LaFargeville.

He was a member of LaFargeville Fire Department and the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows and enjoyed hunting and playing shuffleboard.

Born July 3, 1911, in LaFargeville, a son of James and Helen Louks Barton, he attended LaFargeville schools.

He married Camilla “Cammy” R. McNickle on Sept. 16, 1933, at Boonville Methodist Church with her stepfather, the Rev. William Eddy, officiating. She died April 2, 1995.

Surviving are four daughters, Gail Healy, Alexandria Bay, Linda Barton, West Lebanon, N.H., Mrs. Jimmie (Sally) Crews, Rochester, and Mrs. David (Trina) Hosmer, Stowe, Vt.; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

A brother, Virgil, died before him.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at LaFargeville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Par Paige officiating. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Costello Funeral Home.
