LOWVILLE, N.Y. —
Dorothy Estelle Walter,
95, formerly of Trinity Avenue and the East Road Adult Home,
passed away on Saturday morning, July 21, at the Lewis
County Residential Health Care Facility where she had
resided since April.
Born April 18, 1917, in Lowville, the daughter of the late
Arthur and Stella Vary Lasher Rowsam, she graduated from
Lowville Free Academy in 1934 and on
She married Franklin Clark Walter on May 12, 1942, at the
Methodist Church Parsonage in New Bremen with Rev. Myron
French officiating.
Dorothy and Franklin were self-employed owners of Walter’s
General Store in Lowville from 1951 until 1977, when they
sold the business to Sherwood Widrick.
Franklin died in November of 1979.
Mrs. Walter was a long-time member of the Lowville Methodist
Church and was an active member of the Lowville Senior
Citizens Group for whom she helped organize many trips for
seniors. She was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year for
Lewis County.
In addition to traveling with the Senior Citizen Group,
Dorothy also enjoyed knitting and sewing.
Dorothy is survived by her only son Frederick C. “Fred”
Walter of Watertown; her sister Winnie Sweredoski of Delray
Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her brother John E. Rowsam and sister
Elizabeth J. “Betty” Lacey.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at
Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Beth O’Neil, pastor,
officiating. Burial will follow in West Lowville Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 23 at the funeral
home..
