Gerald E. Ball

CLAYTON, N.Y.  —  Gerald E. "Ike" Ball, 89, formerly of Clayton, died Thursday at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery at the family’s convenience. 

Born Sept. 26, 1921, in Clayton, the son of Roy and Gladys Percy Ball, he graduated from Clayton High School.

He entered the Army in 1943, and he was part of the 617th military police escort guard company. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He retired in 1982 after many years as a U.S. Customs inspector on Wellesley Island. 

He was a member of the Clayton American Legion Colon Couch Post 821. 

Ike was also a long time member of the Tuesday Senior Men’s Golf League. 

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis, Watertown; a son and his wife, William and Mary Marshall, Bedford N.H; a daughter and her husband, Sherri and Dennis McCarthy, Hockessin Del.; a step-daughter and her husband, Nancy and Tommy Thompson, Watertown; a stepson, John Le Claire, Poughkeepsie; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. 

Two brothers John and Donald Ball, three sisters Fern Gifford, Helen Froome, and Carolyn Morin, also one stepdaughter Elizabeth Weller Marchwicki predeceased Ike.

Donations can be made in his name to the Hospice of Jefferson County or the Clayton American Legion Colon Couch Post 821.
