LOWVILLE, N.Y. —
Paul C. Merz, 92, of 5701 Brookside Circle “Brookside Senior Living Community”, passed
Sunday, Aug. 14, at Lowville County Residential Health Care Facility where he had been residing since July.
The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville. Calling hours will precede the funeral from
1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Naumburg Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.
Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Croghan, son of John and Clara Einbeck Merz, he graduated
in 1935 from Lowville Academy. He received a bachelor’s
degree from Cornell University in 1940 where he was also a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He worked at Dairymens’s League in 1940 until October of 1941 as a field serviceman and milk plant manager.
Mr. Merz enlisted in the Navy in December 1941 and was honorably discharged as a
lieutenant in April 1946. He served as an Ensign aboard P.C. 609, as
skipper aboard the P.C. 610, and skipper and fleet commander over 14 ships while aboard P.C.1233. He served in the South Atlantic and Pacific
theaters.
Upon his discharge, he returned home where he owned and operated a feed and farm supply business in Castorland from 1946 until he retired in 1987.
He became director of the Lewis County Trust Co. which became St. Lawrence National Bank and later Community Bank, N.A., Director of the Harrisville Manufacturing Co., a member of the Lewis County Legislature for 24 years serving as chairman for 6 years, director and Past President of the NYS Supervisor’s and Legislature Association, on the Board of Director’s for the Lewis County Industrial Development Agency for 17 years, a member of the Black River - St. Lawrence Regional Planning Board, and Director at the Lewis County General Hospital.
Among his survivors are a sister and her husband, Anna and James Lucker, Tampa,
Fla.; two nephews, Roy Merz, Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Richard and Kathy Merz, Cape Coral,
Fla.
A brother and his wife, Milton and Ethel Merz, died before him.
