Frieda M. Roggie

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Frieda M. Roggie, 77, of 7531 Waters Rd., passed away Tuesday, Aug.16, while under the care of Lewis County Hospice and her children.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Croghan Mennonite Church with Rev. Edward Roggie, brother-in-law, Rev. Evan Zehr and Rev. Keith Zehr, officiating. A private burial will be in Croghan Mennonite Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

Born Jan. 28, 1934, in Lowville, the daughter of Mahlon and Ruth Ressler Jantzi, she attended country schools for the first six years and then attended General Martin School in Glenfield. She then went on to attend Gladys High School in Virginia, and later Greenwood Mennonite High School in Delaware. She then returned along with her family to Lewis County and attended Lowville Academy until the age 17.

She then began doing domestic work for area families. In later years she cared for the elderly in their homes until 2009.

She married Ralph A. Roggie on March 19, 1952 in Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. Together they owned and operated the family farm on Waters Road for 50 years. It is now owned and operated by their grandson and his wife, Jeremy and Andrea Steria.

Surviving are three daughters and their spouses, Elizabeth and Keith Steria of Glenfield, Joyce and Jay Zehr of Beaver Falls, Lois and Joey Roberts, Lowville; a son and his wife, Glendon and Irene Roggie of Lowville, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, four brothers and their spouses, Wilbur and Florence Jantzi , Croghan, Maynard and Jean Jantzi, Brownville, Lyle and Shirley Jantzi, Adams, and Lawrence Jantzi, Clymer.

She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 59 years, Ralph A., who passed away Jan. 21, 2011, two sisters, Cleo Jantzi in infancy and Grace Haldeman in 2000.

Mrs/ Roggie was a member of Lowville Mennonite Church where she taught Bible School and Sunday School, and also was involved in the sewing circle.

She hosted fresh air children for many years, cared for three of her nieces for a period of time, babysat and was involved in raising some of her grandchildren.

Mrs. Roggie was very generous and welcoming, opening her home to he family and her children's friends.

She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, making quilts and clothing for her children and grandchildren. She was also an avid reader and spent many winter evenings reading to her children and instilled the love of reading in all of her children. 

She also enjoyed traveling, playing board games and doing word searches. 

But she especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
