Delbert A. Nelson

HAMMOND, N.Y.  —  Delbert A. Nelson, 81, of Lake St., Hammond, died Saturday morning at Claxton Hepburn Hospital in Ogdensburg where he had been a patient since Aug. 8, 2011.

Born Oct. 2, 1929, in Rossie, N,Y,, the son of H. Elvin, and Flora Baldwin Nelson, he was educated in Hammond Schools. 

He married Mary Felt on Sept. 2, 1951, at the Hammond Presbyterian Church. She died Feb. 24, 2010.

Delbert worked in the maintenance department for the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority for 17 years.  He was also a long-time dairy farmer, operating farms in Rossie and South Hammond.

He was a member of the Hammond Presbyterian Church, Hammond Masonic Lodge, and enjoyed sports and his family.

Surviving are two children: Debra Arquitt, Clayton, and Kevin Nelson and his companion Claudia Kirkland, Alexandria Bay; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Nelson, Lowville.

Ttwo brothers, Ivan and Erwin Nelson, and two sisters, Helen Simons and Martha Jenne, all died before him.

Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay.  A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the funeral home with Rev. Cathy Stevenson officiating. Burial will be in Rarick Cemetery, South Hammond.
