BELLEVILLE, N.Y.  —  Lucine W. LaTant, 97, a former longtime resident of Belleville, died Thursday morning in Community General Hospital in Syracuse.

Born May 1, 1914, in Adams, a daughter of Brayton J. and Hannah Foley Williams, she was a graduate of the Union Academy of Belleville and the Central City Business Institute in Syracuse.

She married Leon E. LaTant on Aug. 16, 1940, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Adams.

They lived in Belleville following their marriage and Lucine worked as a census taker for Jefferson County while employed at Union Academy of Belleville, then it became Belleville Central School as the office secretary for over 30 years, retiring in 1980 to spend time with her grandchildren. Her husband Leon passed away May 3, 1976.

Following her retirement, she spent several years traveling with her sister, together they visited various locales around the globe but her heart was always in New York with her children.

Lucine was a communicant of St. Cecilia’s Church, a charter member of the Belleville Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, served on the town board of elections, and was a active member of the community.

She was an avid SU sports fan and enjoyed Saturday afternoons watching football or basketball with the family.

Lucine will be remembered by all as a fun, friendly, lively lady and will be sorely missed.

Lucine is survived by three children, Lance (Suzanne) LaTant, Leon (Tracy) LaTant and Lucinda (David) Walts; six grandchildren, Heather (Anthony) Aragona, Kevin LaTant, Jordan (Steven) Alexander, David J. Walts, Jeremy Walts and Ryan LaTant; two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews all over the country.

She was predeceased by her husband, two sisters, Yvonne Richardson of California and Arlene Dalton of Georgia and a granddaughter, Joni Walts.

The family would like to thank the staff at Community General Hospital for their kindness and excellent care of our mother and grandmother during her final days.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Adams Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
