Joseph Nabywaniec

DEFERIET, N.Y.  —  Joseph Nabywaniec, 93, of 35095 Route 3, died Thursday evening at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Carthage. 

Born
July 22, 1918, in Deferiet, the son of John and Veronica Halko Nabywaniec, he attended schools in Deferiet, Great Bend and Carthage High School. 

Joe enlisted in the Army in 1936 and served until June 1945 attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He continued with the Army Reserves until July 1978. 

He married Ruth H. Robinson on Dec. 21, 1953, in Port Leyden. Ruth died on September 10, 2002. 

Joe worked for the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet for 38 years, mainly in the stockroom and was a truck driver.  

He was a life member of American Legion Post # 789, VFW Post # 7227 and the BPOE Lodge # 1762, all of Carthage and charter member of the Deferiet Vol. Fire Dept.

Surviving are a step daughter and her husband, Rose and Ronald Wheeler, Ogden, Utah; a nephew, William Litzendorf, Woodbridge, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.  

Two brothers, Alex and Edward, and a sister, Leona Nabywaniec, all died before him.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept 19, at St. Rita's Church, Deferiet with Rev. Garvin Demarais officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.
