LOWVILLE, N.Y. —
Walter H. Smith, 72, of Hodge Road, died Friday afternoon,
Sept. 16, at his home, under the care of his companion,
family and Lewis County Hospice.
A funeral Mass will be said 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at St.
Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville, with Rev. Christopher
Carrara, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Beaches
Bridge Cemetery. A gathering at St. Peter’s Parish Hall
will follow the burial. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702
Waters Road, Lowville.
Born Jan. 15, 1939, at home on Mohawk Hill, a son of the
late Aloysius and Inez Leffingwell Smith, he attended
Constableville and West Leyden schools.
Mr. Smith stayed with and worked for his uncle, LeRoy
Stinebrickner, and worked on the family farm for 12 years.
He married Wanda Hance on April 24, 1971, at St. Peter’s
Catholic Church, Lowville. Mrs. Smith died on March 10,
1993.
He moved to Lowville and worked in the lumberyard and on the
kilns for AMF for 32 ½ years, retiring in 2002.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, the outdoors and woodworking
and most most of all, spending time with his family.
Mr. Smith was a communicant
of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, James and Heather
Smith, Colchester, Vt., and Walter Jr. and Mona Smith,
Boonville; three grandchildren, Alexis, Derek and Justin;
his longtime companion, Judy Orendorff, Lowville; two
brothers, and their wives, Fredrick and Patsy Smith, Denmark,
and Paul and Audrey Smith, Lowville; two sisters, Paul’s
twin sister, Pauline Smith and her companion Andy Mason,
Hammond, and Rosie Bauer, Syracuse; two half-brothers,
Jerome Smith, Corning, and Robert Smith, Utica; two
half-sisters, Dianne Cannan, Watson, and Marie Morley,
Gloversville; an adopted brother, Douglas McLane, Deer
River; his aunts, Rosemary Smith, Evelyn Mizgala, Bernice
Harrington and Gladys Leffingwell; nieces, nephews and
cousins.
His wife, Wanda Smith and two half-brothers, Duane and
Harold Smith, all died before her.
