Dorothy E. Slade September

Dorothy was born on November, 23, 1917 at the Howard Brodie homestead in the town of Henderson and was the eldest daughter of Richard Charles Hicks and Mary Alvina Villaneuve Hicks. She was raised at the Hicks Farm on the Chestnut Ridge Road and was educated at Sackets Harbor, being a 1936 graduate. During her high school years Dorothy studied and worked at the Rolla and Viola Pettit home and store in the village of Sackets Harbor. She for a time also worked at the Howard Brodie farm on the Brodie Road. She was married to Howard Earl Slade of Smithville on October, 9, 1937 at the Brownville Methodist Church Parsonage by the Reverend Herbert Harrison. For a short time she worked at the Lookout Restaurant. She and Howard farmed on the Massey Street Road near Shannon’s Corners until retiring to her present home in 1971. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Barbara Elizabeth (Mrs. David B. Heasley) near Paddy Hill in the Town of Watertown and her daughter Marie Elaine Slade at home. She is also survived by her three grandchildren; Kathleen Woodruff (Larry) Storrs Point Rd, Sackets Harbor, Bruce Heasley (Teena) North Harbor Road, and Brian Heasley (Linda) Hudson Falls. She is further survived by her seven beloved great-grandchildren: Erick and Kyle Schaeffer, Omaha Nebraska; Megan Woodruff, Storrs Point, Sackets Harbor; Kierstynn and Cameron Heasley, North Harbor Road, Adams Center; and Casey and Nikolas Heasley, Hudson Falls. Additional survivors include much loved nieces and nephews and cousins. Dorothy was predeceased by her devoted husband of 73 years who died on March 31, 2011. She was also predeceased in death by her sister Edith I. Hicks Hunt in 1990 and her brother Richard C. Hicks Jr. in 1999. Dorothy was first and foremost a lifelong partner in the dairy farm operation but also enjoyed gardening and processing foods by canning and freezing. She gained much pleasure from knitting, crocheting, furniture refinishing, and other crafts such as caning and rushing seats. She was a longtime member of Smithville Grange, Home Bureau and Cooperative Extension. She in early life was a member of the Sackets Harbor Methodist Episcopal Church, and at the time of her death, a member of the Sulphur Springs UMC, the United Methodist Women, the Smithville 12:01 club, and the South Jefferson Knitting Groups. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or to Sulphur Springs UMC c/o John Mantle, Storrs Road, Sackets Harbor, NY, 13685. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Louise and Todd Farrington and to Courtney McIntosh for their wonderful efforts as caregivers and who eased Dorothy’s passage from this earthly vale. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday, Sept, 19, at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home in Bellville. Rev. Mona Fargo of Sulphur Springs UMC and Rev. Toby Schilling of Asbury UMC will co-officiate. Special music in tribute to her honorary grandmother will be provided by Judy Heasley Parker. Burial will be in the Smithville Cemetery. Calling hours will be noon to 3 p.m. Monday prior to the service, at the funeral home. The family wishes to extend a
special thank you to the clergy and to the Adams Center
Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary who will provide a luncheon at
the Fire Hall in Adams Center following the burial in the
Smithville Cemetery.
