Barbara J. Carrio, 65,
of Highland Avenue, died Saturday evening, Sept. 17, at Oswego Hospital as a result of an automobile accident.
Born Feb. 25, 1946, in
Ogdensburg, the daughter of Calla Holland Malinowski and the
late Stephen Malinowski, she was adopted at age 5 by her
step father, the Rev. Azad H. Gabriel, after his marriage to
Calla.
She graduated from Indian River High School in Philadelphia
in 1964, Canton ATC, Canton and Rothel Business School of
Ogdensburg.
She married Larry Van Tassel who died as a result of an
accident May 27, 1994. A marriage to Peter Benson ended in
divorce. Later, she married Keith Carrio, of Depauville on
Dec. 14, 2002.
Mrs. Carrio was the owner and operator of an automotive
supply company for many years. She also owned and operated
Carrio’s Market and The House of Joy in Theresa.
She was a former member of the Theresa Planning Board, past
Village and Town Clerk for Morristown and a member of the
Oxbow Presbyterian Church, where she was the organist and
music director.
Survivors include her husband, Keith; her mother, Calla
Holland Gabriel, Hilton; two sons and a daughter-in-law,
Andrew and Lynette Van Tassel and Tracy Van Tassel, all of
Morristown; two daughters and their husbands, Jennifer and
Robert Chayka, Columbia, N.J. and Kimberlee and Michael
Hawthorne, Watertown; seven grandchildren, Robert, Joey and
Timmy Chayka, Addison and Cooper Van Tassel, and Thomas and
Christien Hawthorne; four sisters and their husbands,
Patricia and Joseph Murphy, Morristown, Dianne and James
Balch, North Rose, Marsha and Harold Brown, Alexandria,
Pearl and John Bloom, Hilton; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Clark,
Bethany.
A sister, Kathleen Clark, died before her.
A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at
Oxbow Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ron Sinclair
officiating. A reception will follow the service at the
church.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, at a later
date.
Calling hours are 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23,
at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., Theresa.
