James W. Shutts

ADAMS, N.Y.  —  James W. Shutts, 83, of 7623 Route 11, died Thursday evening, Sept. 18, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. 

The funeral service and Masonic service will be 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. Adele Spencer officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will precede the funeral from 6:30 to 8 p.m. 

Born May 20, 1925, in Hannibal, son of William D. and Florence Brown Shutts, he graduated from Hannibal High School. He attended the Merchant Marine Academy in New London, Conn., and served in Merchant Marine during WWII. For a short time he sailed the Great Lakes. 

He married Barbara Forscutt of Fair Haven on Oct. 25, 1947, in Fair Haven. The couple lived in Hannibal and moved to their present home in 1958. 

He purchased the Valley Station on Route 11, Adams, in 1958. He also ran a fuel supply and oil service business. Mr. Shutts sold the business and retired in 1986. Following his retirement, the couple spent winters in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Surviving besides his wife, are two sons and their wives, Kevin and LuAnn, Lavernia, Texas, amd James W., Jr. and Penny, Sandy Creek; a daughter, Doreen Baker, Adams; seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren, two step grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Pauline and Eugene LaRock, Zephyrhills, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hannibal for 61 years, Sackets Harbor Chapter #68 of the Royal Arch Masons, Service Station Operators of NNY, Modern Oil Heat Institute, Mannsville Manor Fire Dept for 45 years, Mannsville Manor Ambulance - driver and first responder, United Commercial Travelers and served as secretary of Local Chapter 238, South Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Mannsville Manor Ambulance Squad Rt. 81 coffee break from inception to 2003. He was a former member of the Bill Hart Corral, Hannibal.
