LOWVILLE, N.Y. —
Preston S. Brower, 87, formerly of Valley View Courts,
Lowville, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 20, at Lewis County
General Hospital.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Iseneker
Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville, with Rev. Keith Hardy, pastor
of Bethel Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial with
military honors will follow in Old Glendale Cemetery.
Calling hours are noon to 1p.m. Monday prior to the funeral.
Born May 7, 1924, in Mayfield, N.Y., a son of the late
Vernon S. and Helen Winnie Brower, he attended a one room
school house in Dennies Hollow, N.Y., and graduated in 1940
from Gloversville High School. Mr. Brower served with the
Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. Following his service, he
attended Cornell University, and graduated in 1950.
He married Lois Gaylord on Dec. 21, 1951, at the Methodist
Mance in Martinsburg with Rev. Wetzel officiating. Mrs.
Brower died Oct. 31, 2010.
Mr. Brower worked for Mohawk Carpets in Amsterdam, N.Y., as
a quality control staff engineer. From 1960 until 1971, the
Brower family lived in Wrentham, Mass., where Mr. Brower
worked as Manufacturing Superintendent at Kendall Company in
Walpole, Mass.
The family returned to Lowville in 1971, and together with
his wife, the couple owned and operated the Lowville Sport
Shop for four years. He worked for Climax Manufacturing as a
quality control manager for seven years.
Mr. Brower worked as a substitute teacher for area schools,
worked for the ARC as a counselor, and worked for Braman
Manufacturing in Carthage for two years.
Mr. Brower published a book in May 2003 titled "Stories
of a Boy from Gobbler’s Knob", and wrote articles for
the Journal & Republican for many years.
Mr. Brower was a member of
Lewis County Memorial Post 6912 VFW, was member of the 4-H
Club, a member or the “Sod Busters”, and sang with the
Barbershop Quartet of America.
While he lived in Wrentham, Mass., he was an elder in First
Congregational Church, where he also sang in the church
choir.
Mr. Brower enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
Surviving are a son and his wife, Richard P. and Gail Brower,
Lowville; a daughter and her husband, Deborah and Benjamin
Blair Jr., Lowville; a brother and his wife, Winston and
Joyce Brower, Centralia, Wa.; four grandchildren, Jackie and
Jake Miller, Angela and Steve Porter, Ben Blair III, Carissa
Blair, a step-granddaughter Angela and Leonard Stone; 10
great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a daughter Teresa “Terri” Brower,
who died in May, 1970 at age 17; a granddaughter, Bethany
Blair who died on December 5, 2006; two brothers, Weston,
who died in infancy, and Carlton Brower; and a sister,
Phyllis Brower, who died in infancy.
