Rita A. Kamide

CARTHAGE, N.Y.  —  Rita Ann Villnave Steinberg Kamide, 77, of 611 State St., died Tuesday evening, Oct. 4, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse.

Born June 20, 1934, in Potsdam, the daughter of the late Carlton and Frances Gardner Villnave, she attended St. Lawrence Central School. 

She married Thomas J. Kamide Sr. on Sept. 29, 1973, in Carthage. Mr. Kamide died May 6, 2009. A previous marriage to Wendell Steinberg ended in divorce.

Mrs. Kamide worked for 24 years in the converting department of the former Crown Zellerbach Corp. and James River Corp., retiring in 1998.  

Rita was a member of Carthage Area Hospital Auxiliary and was very active in fundraising for the fight against cancer.  

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving are four daughters and their husbands, Elaine E. (Terry) Montgomery, Carthage, Mary E . (John) McCloe, Johnson City, Selma A. (Mike) Thorpe and Charlene M. (Hannibal) Chakhtoura, both of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three sons and their wives, Barry E. (Tracey) Steinberg, Potsdam, Thomas J. (Janine) Kamide Jr., Baldwinsville, and Paul T. (Maureen) Kamide, Vestal; 11 grandchildren, Jason Montgomery, Wendy Montgomery, Adrianne Amell, Angela Hopkins, Ashley Steinberg-Trimm, Virginia Kamide, Julia Kamide, Laura Kamide, Sarah Kamide, Paul Kamide Jr. and Trevor McCloe; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Irish, Massena, and Linda Vari, Raymondville; four brothers, Carlton Villnave, Syracuse, Ronald Villnave, Central Square, Richard Villnave, Winthrop and Harold Villnave, Massena; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Edie Martin, Carthage.

Five brothers, Lawrence, Billy, Charles, Robert and Bruce Villnave and fourt sisters, Ester Jock, Marlene, Florence and Helen Villnave, died before her. 

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. George F. Maroun, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.
