William D. Mahoney

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  William D. Mahoney, 81, formerly of Number Four Road, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 5, at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility. 

A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville, with Rev. Christopher Carrara, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. Calling hours are from 3-5 and 7-9 on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

Born April 29, 1930, in Lyons Falls, a son of the late William M. and Delilah Manzer Mahoney, he graduated in 1948 from Lowville Academy, and served in the Army during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on March 11, 1953.  

He married Julia E. Horvath on Oct. 24, 1953, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville, with Rev. Cotter officiating. Mr. Mahoney worked on the family farm, and later purchased a farm on the Gardner Road. Together with his wife, the couple owned and operated the dairy farm until the mid-1960s.  

He worked on Camp Drum as a driver during the 1960s, and worked in agricultural sales for various companies through 1990. He was manager of the Town Hall Theatre for his daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Pat O’Brien, until he was taken ill. 

Mr. Mahoney was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville. He was a Life Member of Lewis County Memorial Post #6912.  

He enjoyed raising and training horses, and daily trips to town to have coffee with friends. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and family gatherings. 

Surviving are six children and their spouses, Joyce M. and Robert Powis, Sr. of Lowville; Michael D. and Wendy Mahoney of Lowville; Patricia L. and Patrick O’Brien of Lowville; Dennis J. and Jackie Mahoney of Castorland; Neil P. and Tammy Mahoney of Glenfield; William T. and Liana Mahoney of Lowville; two sisters, Kathleen Dening of Lowville; Delilah Mahoney of Lowville; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  

He was predeceased by his wife, Julia Mahoney; a daughter, Barbara Ann Mahoney, who died April 2, 1996;  a sister, Carmeletta Lormore; and two brothers, Thomas and John Mahoney.
