LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Freda J. Millard, 81, of Dayan Street, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 5, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, where she was undergoing rehabilitation due to a recent fall.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Martinsburg Cemetery. 

Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

She was born Nov. 22, 1930, at home on the McDonald Road, a daughter of the late Henry P. and Elizabeth Mahar McDonald. While in school she did babysitting for her relatives. She graduated from Lowville Academy in 1948. 

Freda worked for the dry cleaners in Lowville, and at the veneer mill. 

She married Gilbert W. Millard on Oct. 14, 1950, at St. Mary’s Rectory in Copenhagen. 

Together with her husband, the couple operated a moving business in Lowville, and owned and operated a dairy farm on Route 177. The couple owned and operated Gil’s Towing and Service Station in Lowville from 1973 until 1982. Freda also worked for the Lowville Laundry.

Freda enjoyed visits from her family, reading, going out to dinner and car rides. She most enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Freda is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years, Gil; six children and their spouses, Jerry and Laurie Millard, Lowville, Patrick and Carol Millard, Glenfield, Stephen and Mary “Martha” Millard, Lowville, Gary and Sherry Millard, Glenfield, Jane and Dennis Baker, Castorland, and Lisa and Peter Kelley, Lowville; 28 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Seven brothers, Don, Alfred, Paul, Steve, Addison, Clair and Gordon McDonald, and four sisters, Madeline Nebe, Rita Dowling, Joan Keib, and Sister Charlotte McDonald, all died before her.
