Dr.
John E. Richmond, 94, formerly of Adams, died Friday
morning, Oct. 5, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law
Sara and John Treadwell, Henderson Harbor, where he had been
under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson
County.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the
Adams Village Baptist Church. Burial with military honors
will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery, Adams.
Born June 3, 1918, in Adams, a son of Dr. Harry L. and Mary
Stanley Richmond, he graduated from Adams High School. He
attended Syracuse University for undergraduate work and in
1942 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of
Dental Medicine. He served during Worlds War II in the U.S.
Army Dental Corps from 1943 to 1946 and was stationed in the
Philippines.
He married Janet Piddock on July 4, 1942, at the Adams
Village Baptist Church with Rev. George Brow officiating.
The couple lived in Adams and Talcott Falls all their
married life. Mrs. Richmond died Aug. 18, 2003.
Dr. Richmond practiced dentistry in Adams with his father
for eleven years following his discharge from the army.
After his father’s death, he continued practicing in Adams
until 1974 whereupon he moved to Talcott Falls and practiced
until his retirement in 1986. He moved to Henderson in 2008
to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and David
Moran.
Dr.
Richmond was a charter member of the Adams Lions Club. He
served on the Board of Education during the consolidation of
Adams, Adams Center and Mannsville schools which eventually
became South Jefferson Central School. For many years he was
the supervising dentist of the S.J.C.S. dental program. He
was a long time member and past president of the
Jefferson-Lewis County Dental Association and the 5th
District Dental Society. He felt strongly that everyone
should receive dental care and provided such to many
Northern New York families who might not otherwise have
received it. He was a lifelong member of the Adams Village
Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, William J. Richmond, Tampa, Fla.; four
daughters, Judith A. Overton, Watertown, Mary E. and husband,
Neil Fisher, Vienna, Va., Sara J. and husband, John
Treadwell, Henderson Harbor, Kathleen J. and husband, Darryl
Greene, Adams; a son-in-law, David Moran, Henderson; nine
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and two step
grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara
Moran, who died Feb. 6, 2012.
He treasured his family and friends.
He was an avid fisherman and loved the NY Yankees and
Syracuse University football and basketball.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren
fishing and boating on Lake Ontario.
