Helen J. Cook

PHILADELPHIA, N.Y.  —  Helen J. Cook, 89, of County Route 28, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, at her home under the care of her family, Care Givers, Cerebral Palsy Association and Hospice of Jefferson County. 

Born Dec. 13, 1921, in the town of LeRay, the daughter of Howard D. and Ella Gerber Cranley, she graduated from Evans Mills High School. 

She married Fred L. Cook on Aug. 7, 1942. The couple farmed in the Philadelphia area until retiring in 1979.  Mr. Cook died Feb. 11, 1995. 

A Gold Star Mother, Mrs. Cook was a member of the Robert Markwich Post 798 Auxiliary and the Philadelphia United Methodist Church.  

She enjoyed gardening, baking, fishing, canning, playing horseshoes, bowling, traveling and square dancing. 

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Donald M. and Charee, David W. and Bartina, all of Antwerp, and Randy R. and Tamara, Portola Valley, Calif.; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Hilda Gabel, Watertown; a brother-in-law, Floyd Wassus, Philadelphia; and a sister-in-law, Audrey Cranley, Canastota.  

She was predeceased by a brother, Donald Cranley, a sister, Eleanor Wassus and a son, Ronald F. who died in 1965 while serving in the Air Force. 

A funeral service will be 7 p.m. Friday evening, Oct. 21, at Philadelphia United Methodist Church with Pastor David Snyder officiating. There will be a gathering afterwards at the Robert Markwich Post 798 legion. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa.
