David E. Ashley Sr.

FELTS MILLS, N.Y.  —  David E. Ashley Sr., 64, of 30662 Route 3, passed Friday, Oct. 21, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. There will be no calling hours or burial at this time.

Born Jan. 4, 1947 in Watertown, a son of Earl and Mary Gardner Ashley, he attended Carthage High School.

He married Judy Side on March 18, 1967. Mrs. Ashley worked in the house keeping department at Mercy Hospital for several years.

Mr. Ashley worked for several local farms, Lamphear’s Lumber Co. in Evans Mills and was head of maintenance at Mercy Hospital for 43 years, retiring in 2008.

He was a member of the Black River American Legion, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, was an avid Dale Earnhardt Sr. racing fan and enjoyed hunting.

Among his survivors are his wife, Judy Ashley, Felts Mills; two sons and their wives, David E. and Angel M. Ashley, Felts Mills, Brian K. and Marie A. Ashley, Black River; two daughters and their husbands, Brenda E. and Steven Smith, Felts Mills, Shawn M. and Benjamin Gayton, TX; a son in law, Justin Matteson, Evans Mills; five sisters and their husbands, Bonnie J. and Gerald Walts, Evans Mills, Linda L. and Donald Weatherwax, Antwerp, Lou Anne and Edward Charlton, Pamelia, Jackie L. Ashley, Evans Mills, Tina M. and Kenneth Mitchell, Carthage; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Bambi Matteson passed in 2003, a brother, George Ashley passed in 2010, and a sister, Sharon Ashley died at infancy.
