Maurice D. Gionet Jr.

CLAYTON, N.Y.  —  Maurice D. “Shorty” Gionet Jr., 70, of Carnegie Bay Road, died early Sunday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse where he had been a patient since Tuesday. 

Born April 20, 1937, in Thendara, son of Maurice D. and Elda McIntyre Gionet, he graduated in 1956 from Alexandria Central High School. 

He married Judith A. Mance on June 20, 1959, at St. Cyril’s Church, in Alexandria Bay. 

He owned and operated Gionet’s Garage, Alexandria Bay, for many years. 

He was a member of the Alexandria Bay Fire Department for 49 years. He was also active in Alexandria Bay Minor Hockey and the Alexandria Bay Figure Skating Club. 

Surviving besides his wife are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Maurice D. III "Reecy" and Kelley, Redwood, and Michael, and his companion, Lily Ballantyne, Morrisonville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Robin and Stephen Martin, Alexandria Bay, and Lucella Gionet, Redwood, and five grandsons.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Costello Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be said 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Cyril’s Church with Rev. Scott Fobare officiating. Burial will be at Barnes Settlement Cemetery. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Alexandria Bay Fire Department or to Alexandria Bay Minor Hockey.
